BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS—The San Benito Greyhounds, compliments of solid pitching and opportune hitting, have put themselves in a great position in the District 32-6A standings to qualify for the postseason.
Consecutive wins against Brownsville teams – Veterans Memorial Chargers and the Hanna Eagles – catapulted the ’Hounds to second place in the district standings.
San Benito has a 3-3 record behind the district leader, the Los Fresnos Falcons (5-0), but is ahead of the Harlingen Cardinals (2-3 record, third place) and Veterans Memorial and Hanna (both 2-4, tied for fourth place).
There are two home games remaining, which will be played next week against Veterans Memorial (Tuesday, April 22) and Harlingen (Friday, April 25).
San Benito Head Coach Ramiro Partida, Jr. said district wins continue to be vital, and given the opportunity, the ’Hounds have responded masterfully. Similar to their game against the Chargers that was won by a 1-0 score, Partida’s bunch came through in another close game, this time against the Eagles.
San Benito scored its two runs in the top of the sixth inning against Hanna.
Ricardo Navarro got on base with a single, and Gabriel Covarrubias with an infield error. Both scored after Tony Garcia hit the ball toward the Hanna first baseman. However, when the Hanna infielder tried to get a tag-out at the home plate, he threw the ball over his catcher, allowing San Benito runners to score easily.
The sixth inning was productive for the ’Hounds, who, despite scoring twice, left three more runners stranded on the bases.
Hanna pitcher Sebastian Escamilla had eclipsed 100 pitches by the time San Benito got on the scoreboard.
San Benito was getting great opportunities at scoring as it had left two runners stranded in each of the second and fourth innings. Partida said despite this, the players continued to battle.
“That is a good Hanna team that we beat. It’s not a team that we took lightly, and I’m really proud of our players; we had our chances to score, but we never folded,” Partida said. “For us to be successful three things need to be done. They each have to trust themselves, they have to truth their teammates, and they have to trust in their coaches.”
San Benito pitcher Mauro Arize threw 81 pitches in the one-hitter.
This week, San Benito lost to district leader Los Fresnos by a 9-2 margin. Arizpe and Omar Bravo each scored a run in the game. Justin Montemayor and Ethan Garza were credited with an RBI each.
