BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS—The San Benito Lady Greyhounds won three consecutive games for the third time this season, but what is most vital is they did it during an important part of their schedule – District 32-6A play.

Their dominating 13-0 victory over the Brownsville Veterans Memorial Lady Chargers on Tuesday improved the Lady ’Hounds’ district record to 5-2. They are 15-10-1 overall.

In fact, the Lady ‘Hounds, in the current three-game winning streak, have dominated their opponents thanks to sound defensive play and effective hitting. On April 4, they beat the Brownsville Hanna Lady Eagles, 11-0, and followed it up with a 3-0 win against the Los Fresnos Lady Falcons.

By comparison, their other three-game winning streaks were in the Corpus Christi Bayfront Bash in February against Corpus Christi Moody, Corpus Christi Miller and Austin Westlake, and last month against Zapata, Hanna, and Los Fresnos.

They district finale is Friday at home against the Harlingen Lady Cardinals (6-0 in district, 17-9 overall). The Lady ’Hounds will look to avenge an earlier loss to Harlingen that came by a 5-3 score.

San Benito’s triumphant showing against Veterans Memorial is arguably the most impressive during district. Veterans Memorial came into the game in sole possession of second place. The Lady Chargers’ record was aided by a slim 1-0 victory against these same Lady ’Hounds.

With one district game remaining, the Lady Cardinals are in first place with a 7-0 record. They are followed by second-place San Benito (5-2), and third-place Veterans Memorial (5-3). Los Fresnos (1-6) and Hanna (0-7) have not fared well in district play.

The Lady ’Hounds already had a 2-0 advantage when they blew the important district game wide open in the top of the fourth inning.

“We executed from the beginning and never let up,” San Benito Assistant Coach Audulio Garza said. “I applauded the players on their total team efforts at the end of the game.”

Garza has taken over the coaching duties while Head Coach Krystal Leal is on maternity leave.
In that decisive fourth inning, the Lady ‘Hounds scored six runs. Among the players to cross the home plate were Eliza Gallegos, Jewelianah Mares (triple), Avani Garza (double), Evelynn Hinojosa (double), Arielle Hernandez (single), and pinch runner Keara Dominguez, who came in for Jozanna Montes (walked twice intentionally).

For good measure, San Benito scored four times in the final inning.

Among the runners to score were Garza (single), Hinojosa (base on balls), Dominguez (Montes walk), and Megan Medina (single).

Montes said the loss to Veterans Memorial several weeks ago was something the Lady Hounds didn’t take lightly.

“We took the loss very personal, and it showed up in practice and eventually in this game,” Montes said.
