It’s left to be seen if the spring break portion of the San Benito Lady Greyhounds’ softball season will serve as a reminder there are positives taken from negatives.
After losing a game against the Class 3A Lyford Lady Bulldogs by three runs, a few days later the Lady ‘Hounds responded with a double-digit victory over the Zapata Lady Hawks. Both were non-district contests at home.
San Benito Head Coach Krystal Leal said the extended break from school and getting out of their normal routine appeared to have initially affected their play in the first spring break game.
However, following the 10-0 win over Zapata in a run-ruled game, Leal said the coaching staff has put together a varsity squad that has the personnel to respond to adversity should it come in District 32-6A play.
The Lady ‘Hounds finished the non-district portion of their schedule with a 9-7-1 mark.
Their first district game came against a Brownsville Hanna team that didn’t stand a chance against its northern foe.
San Benito’s district opener victory came by way of a 19-0 score. Sophomore Arielle Hernandez had a grand slam, and senior Jozanna Montes a homerun.
Montes has smacked three homeruns in as many games to help add to San Benito’s offensive prowess.
