The City of San Benito Commissioners held a regular meeting on Feb. 18. There were no public comments.
Stephanie Sarriondia, Finance Director for the City of San Benito presented the City’s key performance indicators for the first quarter of the fiscal year. According to Sarriondia, in the human resources department, there were 24 new hires, 11 terminations, three events, and seven employee engagements.
In the library department, there were 10,800 visits, 244 program attendees, 144 new cards distributed, three community outreach efforts, 906 items in circulation for adults, 808 items in circulation for juveniles, and 752 different digital resources.
The cultural arts center had three exhibitions, eight events, 361 attendees for the events, 483 total visitors, 58,698 more views on Facebook in recent months, 11,420 more views on Instagram, and 45 more followers on Facebook.
Key performance indicators for the San Benito Planning & Zoning Department, were six subdivision reviews, one recorded flat, one notice to proceed, one subdivided variance, three rezones, one conditional use permit, and 12 setback variances.
In the Code Enforcement Department, there were 106 weedy lot notices, four dilapidated structure notices, 37 junked vehicle notices, 21 junked vehicles tagged, 14 different sightings of debris and brush, 166 bandit signs removed, eight thank you letters received, 20 illegal dumping sights, five-stop work orders, 30 properties mowed by a city contractor, 12 food establishment inspections, three food trucks and mobile vendors, and 30 events.
In the San Benito Building & Permits Department, there were 257 garage sale permits issued, 78 plan reviews processed, 368 inspections conducted, and five office and field consultations. General maintenance for the City included painting two municipal buildings, removing and repainting amphitheater tiles, and tinted windows at the municipal building, and successfully maintaining generators at the police department, City Hall, and the municipal building.
The San Benito Stormwater Department has 24 new residential constructions, 30 new residential and commercial construction and initial routine inspections, five inlet inspections, three meetings and trainings, and two community outreach efforts.
The police department reported six incidents of rape, 22 aggravated assaults, 55 simple assaults, 27 incidents of burglary, 172 theft larceny incidents, 13 motor vehicle theft incidents, 8,265 calls for service, 1,699 incident reports, 333 arrests, 175 traffic collisions, 608 citations, and 1,484 warnings. The San Benito Water Department, meanwhile, had 75 sewer backup incidents and three major water breaks.
Sarriondia also presented the quarterly financial reports. The general balance sheet showed the current total assets as $7,492,566 and the total liabilities and fund balance as $23,439,596. The total revenues for the year to date are $7,494,132, and the total expenditures are $3,724,817. The current assets for the hotel and motel balance are $807,486.
Sarriondia continued to present the investment report for the first quarter. The quarter-end summary showed an interest income of $524,998.
The commission approved the Feb. 4 meeting minutes, the second and final reading of Ordinance 2103-008-02-2025, and the second and final reading of Ordinance 2252-AE-02-2025. This approves a property rezone request in the San Benito Land and Water Company subdivision. The commission also granted the mayor to accept and approve the application of any Operation Stonegarden Grant issued by the governor from March 1, 2025, to Feb. 28, 2026.
An air conditioning refrigerant detection system from Johnstone Supply for the San Benito City Hall was approved. Float level switches from Zone Industries for all City of San Benito Lift Stations were also approved. The commission approved payment to Lawn Doctors Sculpting, OMT Utilities, and Spectrum Weather and Specialty Insurance Inc. for various projects around the city.
The Commission approved action on ancillary legal services and nominated Anya Guantes and Juan Antonio Maya Jr. to the building standards and renewal board. The commission decided to proceed as discussed in the executive session for project number 2025-001 and made no action related to the Fun-N-Sun RV resort.
