RIO HONDO, TX—The dominance exhibited by the Rio Hondo Lady ’Cat Varsity Basketball Team during the regular season has carried over into the playoffs as the Deep River squad continues to show why it is one of the best teams in the state.
After winning the District 32-3A title outright, Rio Hondo was paired against the Vanquard Academy Rembrandt Lady Spartans. The outcome was 95-6.
“The girls came out hot from the start and never looked back,” Lady ’Cat Head Coach Victor Sauceda said. “They’re playing to the standard we set all year, and it showed Monday night.”
Rio Hondo defeated a team, which is based in Pharr, that finished 4-4 overall on the season. The Lady Spartans placed second in their district.
On the flip side, Rio Hondo scored in the 90s for the sixth time this season.
The team played in the area round against Bishop at a neutral site which was Harlingen South.
The Lady Badgers were a much-improved team compared to Vanguard. They were 12-0 in district and finished in first place. They went into the Rio Hondo game with an overall record of 25-8.
The Rio Hondo Bobcats, meanwhile, scored 100 points for the first time this season when they defeated IDEA Frontier College Prep in the district finale this week.
The overwhelming 102-45 victory cemented Rio Hondo’s second-place finish in District 32-3A, finishing 14-4. They defeated a Frontier team that struggled mightily this season as its overall 2-23 (2-16 district) record shows.
Last week, the Bobcats also won 69-22 against IDEA Weslaco Pike.
Rio Hondo goes into the postseason with an overall 20-13 record.
