It’s one thing to go undefeated for a season. It’s another to go unbeaten throughout two campaigns, but a team that goes undefeated and holds its opponents scoreless throughout those two tours is operating at an entirely different level.
That’s exactly what the San Benito Bullies 6U TexaSports Flag Football squad has accomplished in two seasons, as the little gridiron giants have yet to allow their opponents to score a touchdown or earn a victory against them throughout that time.
The Bullies’ effort has culminated in a bid to be recognized as the best in their division in the entire football-obsessed Lone Star State as the squad travels to Frisco, TX this weekend where it is battling for the state divisional championship at Frisco Star Stadium, also known as the Dallas Cowboy Practice Field. There, the Bullies face the TexaSports’ Denton Conference’s Tru Buzz for state supremacy.
The Bullies earned the right to compete for the TexaSports’ Divisional State Championship on Sunday, Nov. 24, after defeating the Fort Worth Longhorns during the Regional Conference 6U Final Four match-up last Saturday, Nov. 16, in Three Rivers, TX.
According to its website, TexaSports was formed in 2017 with a vision to change the landscape of youth sports in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, and the State of Texas.
The Bullies boast different divisions based on ages, ranging from its pewee flag football division to its older pads and helmet tackle division.
Team president and volunteer coach, Jerry Gonzalez, 30, said TexaSports’ brand of football is an alternative to what has been offered in the area, as far as youth football programs, are concerned. The Bullies, according to Gonzalez, compete in the RGV Conference, one of four TexaSports conferences in the state which also include, the Dallas, Houston and Alice Conferences.
The results have been impressive as the program’s popularity is on display during every game and otherwise routine practices as parents and supporters line the practice field sidelines throughout the youth athletes’ hours’ long practice sessions at San Benito’s First Responders’ Park located off of South Sam Houston Blvd., behind Fire Station #1.
The team’s efforts have not gone unnoticed as the squad was honored Tuesday evening by the San Benito City Commission during the commissioners’ meeting at City Hall.
Bullies’ Head Coach Hector Ruiz, 48, a former San Benito Greyhound, San Benito High School Class of 1995, said what makes his squad special is that every athlete on the field loves the sport equally and each athlete puts in the work on the field, each and every outing.
Ruiz said that the Bullies garnered the RGV Conference Championship last season and that this season marks only the second season this iteration of the squad has competed together.
“We have a great group of coaches that understand the game and have a lot of experience with the game alongside a great group of kids who enjoy the work,” Ruiz said as per the team’s secret to success.
The Bullies have dominated the competition, at times defeating their gridiron foes by an over 20-point margin. As expected however, the competition has been a bit tougher as the squad advances in the postseason, culminating a 6-0 shutout win last weekend against the Longhorns.
