With election season underway, many organizations are encouraging citizens to vote. The League of United Latin American Citizens [LULAC], is holding a march on Oct. 12 to do just that.
Luis Flores, President of the San Benito-area LULAC Chapter said the event was originally conduct voter registration, but weather delays pushed it back. Now, the event is to encourage voting. “It doesn’t matter for who, just get out and vote,” said Flores.
Attendees can expect “a bunch of noise,” excitement, and a march. According to the event listing, the march will travel from the San Benito City Hall, located at 485 N Sam Houston Blvd, to Veterans War Memorial Park, located at 151 E Rowson Street. The march will be held from 10:30 – 10:45 a.m. The LULAC District Director, Federico Garza, will be addressing the attendees at 11 a.m.
Flores encourages those interested in the event to bring friends and relatives. “We want them to know it’s for a good, worthy cause,” said Flores. He also said that due to the separate veterans’ event that was postponed, the march will include recognition for veterans.
According to their website, the LULAC is the nation’s “oldest, largest, and most respected Latino civil rights organization in the United States.” Their mission is to “advance the economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, housing, health and civil rights of the Hispanic population of the United States and Puerto Rico.”
