AUSTIN, TX—To prepare his team for the postseason, San Benito head coach Dan Gomez amassed some of the top teams in the state for the Greyhounds’ non-district schedule. This week the ’Hounds faced what is arguably their toughest opponent of the year, as they took on the #4 state-ranked team in 6A, the Austin Westlake Chaparrals.
Westlake got the ball first and wasted no time as they marched down the field and scored in less than two minutes as QB, Rees Wise (10-for-16, 168 yards, two TDs) connected with WR, Chase Bowen to go up 7-0.
After stopping the Greyhounds, Austin was on the move again as Chaparrals’ running back Justice Johnson (13 car, 93 yards, two TDs) made his way into the end zone to give Westlake a 14-0 lead.
Still in the first quarter, San Benito got on the scoreboard on a 71-yard touchdown run by RB, Gabriel Covarrubias (10 car, 67 yards) as the Greyhounds now trailed, 14-7.
Unfortunately for the Greyhounds, the Chaps went on to score three more touchdowns in the first half, reeling off 49 unanswered points in their 63-7 rout.
Westlake’s swarming defense proved too much for the Greyhounds offensive line as they picked up five sacks and held the Greyhounds to just 134 total yards (24 passing, 110 rushing yards).
Regardless of the outcome, Coach Gomez believes the matchups will benefit the Greyhounds in the long run.
“We always want to challenge our kids… They need challenges. They need toughness in order to strive in the world today. So, we accepted the challenge; we came out here. All we asked of our kids, each and every year, is to give us the best they have, not to worry about scoreboards, just go out there and give us what they got,” said Coach Gomez, via a social media interview.
San Benito (0-2) will next face (1-1) Laredo United on Friday, Sept. 13 at home. Last season, United defeated San Benito in the Area round of the playoffs, 58-42.
