Deputies see heavy area activity

The San Benito area kept Cameron County Sheriff’s Deputies busy in recent weeks as they responded to a flurry of calls, many of which led to arrests in separate incidents.

WANTED SUSPECT ARRESTED
On Monday, August 26, 2024, Cameron County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to Los Indios International Bridge regarding a wanted female who was detained at the location.

According to the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), upon arriving at the bridge, deputies ran a name and date of birth check on Sarai Hinojosa, and confirmed she had an outstanding warrant for her arrest for Assault on a Pregnant Person, a Third Degree Felony, out of the Kennedy County Sheriff’s Office. She was placed under arrest and transported to the Cameron County Carrizales Rucker Detention Center in Olmito for arraignment and processing.

ABANDONING/ENDANGERING A CHILD
On Monday, August 26, 2024, at about 1:50 p.m., Cameron County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the 32000 block of Bent Tree Ave., regarding a civil matter involving a child custody dispute. Responding deputies were advised that the child at the center of the custody dispute was residing at a location in questionable and concerning conditions under the supervision of the child’s father, 29-year-old Javier Lopez.

According to the CCSO, deputies made contact with Lopez, and he allowed the deputies access in to the residence to check on the welfare and living conditions of the child. Sheriff’s deputies observed that the living conditions within the residence were allegedly deplorable, read the CCSO report, with no running water, old trash left on the floor, an insect infestation which included roaches and ants, dirty diapers on the floor, and many other signs of neglect to the cleanliness and proper healthy living conditions of the residence.

According to the CCSO, deputies then observed that the child was also in an alleged neglected state, wearing a soiled diaper and presenting insect bites, old and new, as well as an untreated rash and displaying signs of dehydration.

According to the CCSO, deputies gathered enough evidence to show that Lopez was committing T.P.C. 22.041 (f) Abandoning/Endangering a Child w/Criminal Negligence, a State Jail Felony. Lopez was placed under arrest and transported to Cameron County Carrizales Rucker Detention Center in Olmito for arraignment. The minor child was evaluated by EMS and released to a family member.

UNDER THE INFLUENCE
On Monday, August 26, 2024, at around 12:31 a.m., Cameron County Sheriff’s Deputies responded the 32000 block of Gaynor Dr. in Los Fresnos in reference to a call to assist EMS. Deputies who responded were advised that EMS was at the location with a subject who had allegedly taken an unknown amount of drugs.

Upon arriving to the scene, deputies made contact with EMS personnel who evaluated the male subject identified as Antonio Francisco Williams, and added that he told them he had been drinking all day but was allegedly refusing transport to the hospital. Sheriff’s deputies also learned that Williams had fallen off his truck several times due to his alleged inebriation.

According to the CCSO, Williams’ eyes were allegedly bloodshot. His balance was allegedly unsteady. His speech was allegedly slurred, and he reportedly had a strong odor of alcohol emitting from his breath.
Due to these factors, deputies determined that Williams was a danger to himself and others if not taken into custody. He was placed under arrest and charged with T.P.C. 49.02; Public Intoxication. He was transported to Cameron County Carrizales Rucker Detention Center in Olmito for processing.

PUBLIC INTOXICATION
On Sunday, August 25, 2024, Cameron County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to Espinoza Rd., just outside of San Benito regarding a person allegedly asleep inside a vehicle. Upon arrival, deputies observed a vehicle parked in front of a residence on the 34000 block of El Rancho Rd. Deputies knocked on the vehicle’s window to make contact with a male subject who was reportedly asleep inside the vehicle.

According to a CCSO, deputies made contact with Alex Roel, who, according to the CCSO report, showed signs of intoxication. According to the sheriff’s office report, Roel informed deputies he had consumed approximately 10 beers at a friend’s house. Deputies determined Roel was allegedly intoxicated to the degree he was a danger to himself or others while in a public place.

Deputies arrested Roel, and transported him to the Cameron County Carrizales Rucker Detention Center in Olmito pending arraignment. He was charged with Public Intoxication, TPC: 49.02, a Class “A“ Misdemeanor.

WANTED SUBJECT CHARGED
On Friday, August 23, 2024, at 2:47 p.m., and while patrolling the area of Hwy 281 and Calle San Lucas, in the San Benito area, sheriff’s deputies conducted a traffic stop on a red Mercedes-Benz traveling westbound on Hwy. 281.

According to a CCSO report, the stop was conducted due to an alleged violation of Texas Transportation Code: 502.407, operating a Vehicle with Expired Registration.

Upon making contact with its driver, identified as 23-year-old Tommy Ray Castro, sheriff’s deputies noticed a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. According to the CCSO, a driver’s license check on Castro revealed that he had an outstanding warrant for his arrest for Racing on the Highway. He was placed under arrest for the warrant and upon conducting a search, deputies located a THC Vape cartridge on his person.

Castro was transported to the Cameron County Carrizales Rucker Detention Center in Olmito and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance, Penalty Group II, a State Jail Felony, and with the outstanding Warrant for Racing on Highway, he remains incarcerated at Cameron County Carrizales Rucker Detention Center on said charges.

INVASIVE VISUAL RECORDING
On Thursday, July 25, 2024, a complainant contacted the CCCSO to report an alleged past Invasive Visual Recording of a Family Member. Sheriff’s investigators started an investigation into this alleged offense and were able to obtain the video allegedly shot by Raul Ricardo Herrera of the victim while the victim was nude.
Investigators learned that Herrera had allegedly recorded the video without the victim’s consent and for allegedly sexually nefarious purposes. Investigators obtained an arrest warrant for Herrera for T.P.C. 21.15; Invasive Visual Recording.

On August 20, 2024, investigators were able to locate and apprehend Herrera. He was placed under arrest for said warrant and transported to Cameron County Carrizales Rucker Detention Center in Olmito for arraignment. He remains incarcerated at the Cameron County Jail on a $75,000 bond.

OUTSTANDING WARRANT
On August 17, 2024, Cameron County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a local eatery at the 31000 block of F.M. 510 in San Benito about a male subject refusing to pay for his meal. Upon arriving, deputies made contact with the suspect who was refusing to pay.

According to the CCSO, the suspect refused to provide his name, and date of birth. He then became belligerent and uncooperative, according to the deputies. The male subject was detained and taken to the Border Patrol Station for fingerprinting.

The suspect was then identified as 32-year-old Julio Cesar Cantu from San Benito. According to the CCSO, Cantu had an outstanding warrant for his arrest for Assault Family Violence. He was transported to the Cameron County Carrizales Rucker Detention Center for arraignment.

EVADING ARREST
On August 17, 2024, a Cameron County Sheriff’s Deputy reportedly observed a red Dodge Journey allegedly disregarding a stop sign on Calle Paloma and FM 732 located outside the San Benito City Limits.
Upon viewing said traffic infraction, the deputy attempted to conduct a stop by activing his emergency red and blue lights. The Dodge Journey reportedly continued to accelerate and refused to come to a complete stop for the deputy.

The Dodge Journey came to a complete stop at 34656 FM 732 and the operator of the Journey, exited the vehicle and ran inside the home, allegedly disregarding the deputy’s commands. Witnesses on the scene stated to the deputy that the male subject did not reside at the home. The deputy, however made contact with a witness who identified the male as Jaime Alvarez.

The homeowner said he did not want any problems and allowed the deputy and assisting officers to enter the home. Upon entry into the home, the deputy and assisting officers located Alvarez and took him into custody. Alvarez was arrested for Evading Arrest with a Vehicle, a Third Degree Felony, and he was booked into the Cameron County Carrizales Rucker Detention Center in Olmito without incident.

CRIMINAL MISCHIEF
On Sunday, August 18, 2024, Cameron County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a residence in the San Benito area, in reference to a disturbance call.

Upon arrival, deputies made contact with the caller who said he and his son, identified as Elmer Ramirez, had an argument due to his son being allegedly intoxicated. The caller said it was only a verbal argument amongst each other and nothing physical occurred between them. The caller further said he did not want to file a report at this time but wanted Elmer to stay in his bedroom and “sleep it off.”

Deputies made contact with Elmer who allegedly showed signs of intoxication. Elmer further informed deputies he would stay in his room to keep the peace.

At or about 1:29 p.m., deputies again responded to the residence. Deputies were advised that Elmer was allegedly causing a disturbance at the residence and was now damaging property.

Upon arrival, deputies made contact with the caller who stated Elmer was allegedly causing another disturbance inside the residence and was throwing items. The caller then stated Elmer was being aggressive and screaming profanity at him. The caller then stated Elmer threw one of his brown and white wooden dining chairs causing it to break.

The caller said the chair was worth $70 and that he wanted to file charges against Elmer for the damage done to the chair.

Deputies made contact with Elmer who still showed signs of allegedly being intoxicated such as glossy bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, an inability to keep his balance, and a strong odor of alcohol emitting from his breath. Elmer was placed under arrest for Criminal Mischief and transported to the Cameron County Carrizales Rucker Detention Center without incident.

All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
