Alleged Reckless Arson
On Thursday, Aug. 1, 2024 at about 8:15 p.m., Cameron County Sheriff Deputies responded to the 32000 block of Bent Tree just outside the San Benito City Limits regarding a fire emergency. Upon arrival, Cameron County Sheriff’s Deputies observed an RV mobile home, and several vehicles ablaze. Due to high winds, the fire spread to neighboring properties causing damage.

San Benito Fire Department (SBFD) successfully extinguished the fire preventing further damage to neighboring properties. During the investigation, sheriff’s deputies made contact with Juan Gomez, a resident of the property where the fire initiated. According to the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), Gomez confessed to Sheriff’s Deputies that he was burning trash and lost control of the fire.

According to the CCSO, sheriff’s deputies contacted neighbors who reported that this was not the first time Gomez has burnt trash and lost control of the fire.

Sheriff’s deputies arrested Gomez and transported him to the Cameron County Carrizales Rucker Detention Center in Olmito pending arraignment. Gomez is charged with Arson, TPC: 28.02, a State Jail Felony.

Woman Arrested for Drug Possession
On Friday, August 2, 2024, at about 10 a.m., Cameron County Sheriff’s Deputies received an alert on a license plate reader regarding a wanted person traveling on State Hwy 100, in Los Fresnos.
Sheriff’s deputies conducted a traffic stop on the 2020 Ford Explorer that initiated the alert and contacted the operator, identified as 25-year-old Joanna Rodriguez.

According to the CCSO, a warrants check revealed Rodriguez had an active warrant out of the Pharr Police Department (PPD) for alleged hit and run. Rodriguez was arrested and transported to the Cameron County Carrizales Rucker Detention Center in Olmito for booking procedures.

Upon arrival at the detention center, Rodriguez was asked if she had any contraband, at which point she admitted to concealing a vape pen in the pelvic area of her jeans, reads the CCSO. Rodriguez retrieved the vape pen that allegedly contained Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which was then collected as evidence.

Rodriguez was charged with Possession of Controlled Substance, HSC 481.116, a 3rd Degree Felony, and the warrant for the alleged hit and run out of the PPD.
