On July 27, 2024, Cameron County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to Nelson Rd., just outside of the San Benito City Limits, about an alleged assault.
During an investigation led by the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), it was discovered that the complainant, Delilah Jade Ortega, allegedly had an outstanding warrant for an arrest out of Cameron County, which was verified through dispatch, according to the CCSO.
A CCSO report notes that deputies proceeded to serve said warrant for Aggravated Assault F/V (2022XARW0397) and took Ortega into custody. After placing Ortega in handcuffs, she allegedly began resisting arrest by pulling and pushing her arms, legs, and body out of the deputies’ grasp, dropping her weight, and refusing to stand up while deputies attempted to place her in a patrol unit.
After managing to put Ortega in the patrol unit, deputies began to transport her to the Cameron County Carrizales-Rucker Detention Center in Olmito. During the transport, deputies allege that Ortega began banging her head on the unit’s cage and on the passenger side rear window.
The CCSO alleges that Ortega then began kicking the rear passenger side window with her feet. After several strikes to the window with her feet, she allegedly shattered the window. Ortega then moved next to the window and appeared to try to vacate the unit through the window, the CCSO report reads.
Ortega was charged with Resisting Arrest, Search, or Transport, a Class “A” Misdemeanor, and Criminal Mischief, a Class “B” Misdemeanor.
Later, Ortega took to social media to voice her frustrations and her side of the story. “I was not resisting arrest, I was screaming for the officers to help me in the car ’cause it was muddy and slippery, and I had no shoes on, and I also have proof of that, but they continued to pick me up and drop me into the mud laughing and calling me all types of names just because of the charge that I had,” she wrote on the sheriff’s office Facebook page. “But again, it was dismissed. I won’t apologize or be remorseful for anything because the San Benito Police and the Sheriff’s Department are crooked and will be hearing from my lawyers.”
She went on to mention alleged incidents and violations experienced by her and a friend which authorities had yet to investigate despite voicing complaints. “That’s why I was also mad, because stuff like that should be looked into. This is police brutality. What I went through, no other person should have gone through — getting kicked in the ribs and my knee is no longer working so I have to wear a brace and crutches,” she posted on Facebook.
All parties are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
