A new group of concerned citizens, civic leaders and members of the local business community has emerged with the goal to beautify San Benito and spur economic growth in the process.

The fledgling organization met last week Monday at Victoria’s Party Center located in downtown San Benito to discuss the group’s mission, direction, potential projects and fundraising efforts. Also in attendance were representatives from the City of San Benito, the San Benito Economic Development Corporation (EDC) and the San Benito Consolidated Independent School District. The meeting was helmed by citizen and media professional Willie Rosales Jr., Vice President of Sales at NBC Universal, local affiliate; who, at the tail end of the meeting, said that he acted due to his concern for the city.

Speaking with the NEWS earlier this week, Rosales said that progress has been slow, but steady, nonetheless. The initial pitch was to give a trash bin to the school to help collect whatever garbage needed to be discarded. During last Monday’s organizational meeting, the city offered to provide the bin, cementing an early step in the process.

Rosales said that a t-shirt fundraising effort has been initiated. For $22 per shirt, purchasers can own a purple cotton t-shirt with the words, “Beautify San Benito” scribed, in white, on the shirt. The t-shirts are being sold through July 7. Parties interested in purchasing a t-shirt are encouraged to find Rosales on Facebook and scan the QR Code. The team has also submitted its 501(c)(3) nonprofit application, according to Rosales. Rosales also invited the community to the group’s next meeting, soon to be announced on social media and in the San Benito News weekly calendar of events.

When asked what motivates his effort, Rosales said, “It’s just hard to see,” in regards to the litter around San Benito. “At the end of the day, I got to do my part,” he remarked, adding that it could take at least a year for the movement to garner results.
