San Benito Police Department (SBPD) Officers, this week, apprehended four individuals accused of being behind an attempted vehicular theft.
In October of 2023, the SBPD made the public aware of an increase in thefts and tampering of late model Chevrolet and GMC pickup trucks. Incidents similar in nature have been ongoing since that time across the region and in the City of San Benito.
On February 11, 2024, at or around 4:30 a.m., an SBPD Patrol Division Officer responded to a San Benito residential area where an attempted theft of a 2023 Chevrolet Silverado had just occurred.
According to a SBPD report, the description of the suspects involved, and the vehicle they allegedly fled in, was provided to the police and shortly after the reporting of the incident, officers conducted a traffic stop on a silver-in-color Cadillac passenger vehicle that matched the description of the suspect’s vehicle which was previously provided to officers.
During the stop and subsequent investigation of the subjects occupying the Cadillac, officers determined that they were the same individuals allegedly responsible for the incident being reported involving the Chevrolet Silverado.
The subjects were identified as Juan Daniel Puentes Gonzalez, Daniel De Jesus Flores Garcia, Eduardo Diaz and Fabian Fonseca Garcia.
According to police, along with the activity involving the Chevrolet Silverado, the subjects were allegedly found to be in possession of multiple burglary tools, crack cocaine, and a firearm.
The department is asking the public to remain aware of their surroundings and report suspicious activity to the SBPD or other local authorities, and that individuals owning one of these types of vehicles, to take extra measures in securing their vehicles when they are not occupied.
