MISSION, TX—The historic run by the 2023 Lady ’Hounds’ volleyball team added another chapter this past Monday when the squad captured a rare bi-district championship with a clean sweep of Mission High. The victory adds to an unprecedented hot streak for San Benito, who has now won eight of their last nine matches dating back to late September.
Despite making just their second playoff appearance since 2016, the Lady ’Hounds battled as if they were seasoned playoff vets against Mission, dominating from start to finish on their way to the 3-0 sweep. Star players such as Libero Julissa Nino, setters Hannah Rodriguez, Cassandra Guzman, and Briana Moreno, along with outside hitter Jakeida Ibarra, stepped up in a significant way to nab their sixth straight win.
“They’ve been tremendous workers all season, and we’re really starting to peak at the right time,” said longtime coach Ruby Medina. “It’s been a constant desire to get better every day and put this program in a position it hasn’t been in for a long time. I couldn’t be prouder of the work they’ve put in, but we’re on to the next game.”
In addition to registering their sixth consecutive win, the bi-district victory gave the ladies their 21st “W” of the season, setting a new school record. Not only has San Benito been racking up wins at an unheard-of rate, but the team has been running opponents off the court, for the most part. The combined score through their six-game winning streak has been an astounding 18-2 with five clean sweeps. In total, the ’Hounds have won 56 sets this season while only dropping 28.
As is the case in the playoffs, San Benito’s reward for its inspired play is tougher competition. While the Lady Greyhounds are riding a legendary run, their next opponent comes into the game with an even hotter seven-game win streak, including five straight 3-0 victories.
