Club acquires funds

Boys and Girls Club of San Benito (BGCSB) officials recently announced that the club will soon begin an interior modernization project, complements of Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (D-TX 34th District) and congressional grant funding.

According to BGCSB Director Liz Chavez, the club, along with seven other Boys and Girls Clubs in the Rio Grande Valley, collectively applied for a congressional grant that invests in the developmental needs of children.

Chavez stated, “The project has an estimated cost of $250,000.” She went on to add, “Funding allocated for this project will be used to purchase high quality equipment to ensure clubs are equipped to support learning and overall youth development.”

The improvements include additions and updates to the media room, the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) lab, and the game room. The Boys and Girls Club of San Benito is also set to receive 3D printers, equipment which can be utilized to create podcasts, and new desktops, according to Chavez.

According to the Boys & Girls Club website, the club is currently providing different programs that relate to various fields of interest. The club’s sports and recreation programs include a co-ed kick ball league, a co-ed volleyball league, and a co-ed basketball league. Its education programs include the computer science pathway for all ages and digital literacy essentials for youth ages 8-18. The health and wellness programs include a SMART Moves program for ages 6-18 and a Passport to Manhood Program for ages 11-14.
