EDINBURG, TX—Coaches often say Texas high school football is divided into three seasons: non-district games, district games, and the playoffs.
The Greyhounds are officially in the second part of the season after a phenomenal showing during the first month of games as San Benito wrapped up its non-district schedule last week with another resounding win as its 48-7 shellacking of the Edinburg Bobcats pushed San Benito’s record to a perfect 5-0.
With the two teams entering the game on the opposite ends of the Valley football power rankings- Edinburg now sporting a 0-5 record- the ’Hounds treated this game as a tune up with several starters sitting out. Still, the game was never in doubt as San Benito raced out to 14-0 first quarter lead before cruising to its fourth straight win by at least three touchdowns.
“We take no team lightly, but we’re excited about getting into our district schedule,” said do-everything athlete Atticus De Leon. “Our first goal of the season is always winning a district championship, and we haven’t been able to do that in a few years…This whole team has high expectations, and the job is just getting started.”
De Leon, who has spent time at running back, quarterback, and receiver this season, finished Thursday’s game with 132 yards and two touchdowns passing while adding a rushing touchdown and 35 receiving yards. Angel Trevino, essentially the third running back on the depth chart, added 104 yards and a touchdown on his 12 carries while backup running back Aaron Garza put up another solid game with 68 yards and a touchdown on just six carries.
The stable of talented running backs is led by superstar Fabian Garcia, who racked up another 140 yards and two touchdowns on just 15 touches. The senior is on his way to another record-breaking season, posting at least 100 total yards and three touchdowns in every game so far. With four of their five wins being blowouts, Garcia has been used sparingly, routinely sitting out the second half of games and making the most out of just 14 touches per game.
