Anyone who has lost a loved one recognizes how difficult it can be to hold on to the saying, “It takes time to pick up the pieces” or “time will heal.”

With only a little over four months since her last hug, and smile, acclaimed local songwriter Tere Villarreal’s absence has left a void in the hearts of the many, but her countless memories continue to help fill that space.

Her daughter, Blanca Esmeralda Davis confirms that today, life without her mother is vastly different. “It is difficult picking up the pieces, especially when her pieces are scattered all over the place,” she said.

The late Tere Villarreal, an award-winning, hall of fame songwriter, left behind well over 200 compositions. With many of her songwriting efforts left in place and with the guidance of her publishing company in San Antonio, Texas, her music legacy continues. Many of her songs are boleros — bittersweet, and most of them with a romantic twist.

Her writings, in many ways, depict Villarreal’s personal story, if not her soul and sprit. Although, she confirmed — on numerous occasions — that her songs were not necessarily a reflection on her life, she also noted, that was not always the case.

Those who knew Villarreal knew there was an elegance about her—her mannerisms, her overall makeup, her voice, and her loving smile.

Through her many lifelong adversities and obstacles, Villarreal found the courage and the inspiration to write.
