Pursuit ends in SB

According to a Cameron County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) report, on July 17, 2023, a Cameron County Sheriff Deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Northbound Expressway 77 near the FM 511 exit.

Again citing the report, prior to initiating the traffic stop, the deputy observed a black Cadillac SUV weaving in and out the traffic lanes.

The report continues by reading, despite the deputy activating his emergency lights and siren, the driver of the SUV allegedly accelerated and a pursuit ensued. In the course of the pursuit, the fleeing suspect allegedly reached speeds of up to 60mph and allegedly almost caused a collision with an 18 wheeler.

Finally, the report reads, the suspect’s vehicle came to a stop on the exit of Business 77 in San Benito and the driver was quickly apprehended by the deputy.

The driver was identified as Juan Carlos Salas Cantu, 18-years-old. In a preliminary investigation, Salas Cantu was found to be in possession of a vape pen and he freely admitted that it contained THC. No injuries were reported during the pursuit, according to the CCSO.
