After a record-breaking season that saw San Benito climb as high as the number two ranked team in State by the Texas Girls Coaches Association (TGCA) before bowing out in the State Semi-Final game, the Lady ’Hounds have reached one more historic milestone.
Three players were chosen among the 25 best in Texas as All-Staters by an elite panel of coaches and scouts. Emily Delgado, Amira Rodriguez and Elyssa Ruvio were all named 2nd team All-State after superb individual seasons.
Delgado was one of the best pitchers in the State this year and showed some impressive slugging during the playoffs that has college programs drooling over her. The senior captain has been on an award rampage since the Lady ’Hounds season came to an end, including being named softball player of the year at the annual 956 Sports banquet last month and leading her team to the championship at the Rio Sports South Texas softball showcase last week. Delgado is expected to announce her college commitment in the coming weeks.
Ruvio, another senior captain, put together her best string of games during the playoffs where she was instrumental to the deep run San Benito made. After earning the moniker of Ms. Clutch for her timely hits, Ruvio was able to maintain her high level of play when the competition stiffened. As a three-year starter, Ruvio is also expected to play college softball next season, though no commitment has been made.
