With the Texas heat hitting record highs these last few weeks, Michael and John Duke Carrillo decided they wanted to help law enforcement officers get through these grueling conditions. The brothers, ages four and six, witness the time and effort their father Michael Sr.- a State Trooper -puts in on a daily basis and concluded that some refreshments could be the perfect solution.
The young duo, with help from a supportive family, organized for a lemonade and cupcake stand to not only deliver a morale boost to the local Police Department, but to help raise money for underprivileged families.
“Police deserve our support because they are the ones who help us when we’re scared and when we’re sad,” said the six-year-old Michael Carrillo. “This was our idea because we wanted to support our police.”
The Carrillo family set up shop outside their grandparents’ house, where they were selling an ice cold cup of lemonade along with homemade cupcakes for $5. All proceeds from the one-day sale were designated to be donated to the San Benito Police Department to be used for the purchase of school uniforms.
Spending five hours on a Saturday in near 100-degree weather at their ‘Dos Hermanos Lemonade Stand’, the Carrillo brothers were able to raise a whopping $1,550.
