RIO HONDO, TX—The Rio Hondo Bobcat baseball team wrapped up the best season in school history last month, finishing the year with a sterling 28-4 record that included a 22-game winning streak to start the season.
While the ’Cats ultimately fell to the number one ranked 3A team in the playoffs, it was clear that Rio Hondo boasted one of the most talented rosters in the State. That sentiment was confirmed last week when two Bobcat players were named to the 3A All-State team.
Caleb and Josh Laster, brothers who moved to Rio Hondo from Oklahoma last year, were both named to the 3A 2nd Team All-State squad. Caleb Laster, a senior, was one of the best pitchers in the nation, racking up more strikeouts (178), Wins (16), and No-Hitters (6) than any high school player in the country. Known as a complete player, Caleb Laster also ranked fourth in District 32-3A with a .431 batting average and was named the 32-3A MVP.
“Caleb is definitely one of the best pitchers I’ve ever seen and just an all-around special player, said Head Coach Sergio Gonzalez. “He set the bar very high as far as what is expected from our pitching unit going forward.”
Josh Laster, a sophomore, proved to be one of the most consistent hitters in South Texas with a district best .508 batting average and three homeruns. The multi-talented star was named Second Team All-State as a third baseman while also earning First Team All-District as a pitcher and a third baseman.
