The San Benito Rotary International Club has designated the religious/spiritual community as this year’s HomeTown Heroes.
Started three years ago during the peak of the COVID-19 epidemic, Rotary selected groups of individuals who worked quietly and heroically to help the community cope with the stress of COVID-19, and its many effects on the community’s residents.
The first year “Heroes” were all school personnel, approximately 2,000, who overhauled their method of delivering instruction and support services to educate the community’s children under COVID-19 mandates, meeting the challenge with creative ingenuity.
The second year, Rotary selected first responders and the medical community for their substantial contributions to the welfare of residents.
This year’s recipients, the religious/spiritual community, have been in the midst of helping the people of San Benito cope and accept the realities of COVID. Through grief counseling, food distribution, living/housing subsidies, prayer and comforting words, they have touched the soul of the San Benito community.
For example, Father Joe Villalon from St. Theresa Catholic Church in San Benito and staff presided over all Catholic funerals in San Benito and in one COVID year, conducted 10O funerals.
