Museums awarded funding

The Friends of the San Benito Cultural Heritage Museum has been awarded the San Benito Economic Development Corporation (SBEDC) Community Partnership Grant to benefit the Callandret Black History Museum and Freddy Fender Museum, both located within the City of San Benito.

Founded in 2007, the Friends of the San Benito Cultural Heritage Museum (FSBCHM) continues to preserve, promote, and showcase the history of San Benito to local residents and tourists.

“The EDC has a vision for the growth of San Benito and the Historical Society is proud to be a part of it. We will work together to promote tourism, and these historical markers we are placing in town, will do that. In the future, we plan to continue letting the world know about the contributions the people of San Benito have made and how special our town is.” said Sandra Tumberlinson of the San Benito Historical Society.

San Benito EDC Board President, Julian J. Rios, added, “San Benito has a rich history in the Valley and the San Benito Historical Society has done an outstanding job with preserving that history from the Callandret Museum to the Freddy Fender Museum.” Rios continued, “These museums are the only ones of their kind and the EDC funding their grant helps to provide quality of life destinations for not only our citizens but for tourists who choose to enjoy San Benito.”

Located in the heart of Cameron County, San Benito provides access to Highway I-69, four airports, four maritime ports, and port of entries including Los Indios Bridge home to cold storage inspection facility, USDA inspection location and accessible overweight corridor. Along with organizations including the Friends of The San Benito Cultural Heritage Museum, the San Benito EDC strives to showcase the opportunities City of San Benito offers to citizens, visitors, and investors.

The San Benito EDC is a type b economic development corporation that has been in existence since 1995 and continuously serves the community of San Benito. The committee take pride in being the 57th largest EDC in the state out of 512 that exist throughout Texas.
