After San Benito Mayor Rick Guerra was re-elected in a landslide victory last month, receiving more than 62% of the vote in the three-man race, he immediately got to work on his second-term goals.

As the latest guest in the San Benito Chamber of Commerce’s “Coffee With” series, Guerra outlined his vision for the future of the Resaca City while describing the new members of the commission as allies who will help push his vision into reality.

In front of more than two dozen community leaders and citizens, Guerra, and new Mayor Pro-tem Pete Galvan spoke about a wide range of topics from downtown parking and beautification to the ongoing repairs of streets and lift stations. According to Guerra, the recent elections left him with enough power to finally cross off items on his agenda.

“In the past, I would ask the City Manager to look into things and he would tell me I didn’t have the votes with the commissioners to make that happen,” Guerra said. “Well, now I have the votes, and I plan to use them the best way to help this City… There’s been a lot of work going on behind the scenes and I think the future of San Benito is very bright…We’ve been trying to work with the downtown building owners for a few years now, trying to force them into fixing up these dilapidated buildings,” said Galvan. “The bottom line is we need to fix the downtown area and if we have to condemn some of these buildings to take control of them, that’s an option we’re looking at. Some of these buildings are so dangerous, commissioners can’t even walk into them by ourselves. That’s a problem we’re looking into.”

During the informal event, Guerra noted that Galvan, a 33-year-old local pharmacist also in his second term, has brought a much-needed youthful exuberance to the commission. Among the topics Galvan addressed were the downtown area and street repairs.
