Two new members took their seats with the San Benito City Council, thanking the voters for their support.
Place 1 council member John Goodman and Place 2 councilwoman Deborah A. Morales started serving their three-year terms after winning the May 6 elections.
Goodman, at a regular council meeting, began his term recognizing those who got out to vote and pledged to work together.
Morales said she really wanted to thank the voters as well.
“This is a really great opportunity to work for the people of San Bento,” she said. “I will be your voice.”
Mayor Rick Guerra, who won his re-election bid, said he was also grateful for the voters’ support and added they all have a big task to fulfill as the people’s representatives.
The three took their seats after they were sworn in following canvassing of the votes before the start of Tuesday’s May 16, city council meeting.
Afterwards, Place 1 council member Pete Galvan was appointed as mayor pro-tem for a one-year period.
Galvan then made two announcements of importance to the people.
One is the city’s Market Days scheduled for this Saturday, May 20, on Roberson Street, and the other one is a sandbag distribution on Saturday, May 27, at the city’s civic center.
He said people should start getting prepared as the new Atlantic Hurricane Season starts June 1.
In other business, the council heard a financial report for the month of March 2023.
The city had assets of more than $19.2 million, compared to more than $17.6 million during the same month a year ago.
