Alejandro “Alex” Reyna is vying for SBCISD Board President Ramiro Moreno’s Place 6 seat.
Reyna cited his 10-year employment with the school district, in which he moved up the ranks, starting as a security guard then advancing to a police officer, later becoming a school counselor and eventually a teacher.
“I was trying to help our students in any way,” he said. “And that was my goal, helping our teachers and our community.”
With his counseling background, he said he would advise parents to connect with their children by asking them about their days.
“Every time a situation happened, like our kids getting in trouble, I would say ‘Here’s the opportunity to help students who came to learn something different,’ and at the same time I would talk to the parents,” Reyna said.
During the Q&A portion of the forum, Reyna was asked: “What are your long-term goals for the district?”
Reyna emphasized the importance of welcoming new people into San Benito and the district, as well as retaining them, citing how his family has three generations that have attended San Benito schools.
“I felt that in my heart, I was the right person to help our students and that’s one of the main reasons why I wanted to run for the school board,” he said.
The current school board president, Ramiro Moreno, discussed his extensive educational background and personal experience as a current campus administrator and educator, including his master’s degree and current superintendent’s certificate.
