For well over two decades, La Posada Providencia in San Benito has been helping immigrants escape horrid conditions by providing a safe haven for those in need. While the staff members of the facility have been top notch, the facilities themselves were in desperate need of an update.

Now, thanks to the Mennonite Disaster Services (MDS) — a non-profit organization that has been responding to natural disasters across the Country since the 50’s — La Posada was able to unveil four new buildings on their property. The buildings, which include three dorms and a common area, were officially christened by the construction team from MDS last week at a special ceremony.

“The incredible staff and volunteers who have made this project come true should feel very proud of themselves,” said new Executive Director Ben Duel. “These people have been doing incredible work long before I got here and I’m just trying to hold on to the reigns and keep steering the ship in the right direction… This a great time for La Posada and we look forward to being able to provide the kind of help that is needed in this world.”

The journey to find better accommodations at La Posada began more than six years ago with a simple conversation between staff members. After reaching out to several entities, leaders at MDS and Ohio Disaster Services were able to come to the rescue. While the two organizations usually focus on natural disasters, the situation at the border gave everyone involved a reason for action.

“With all the craziness going on at our border, [MDS] was able to see this as a humanitarian disaster,” said La Posada Board Chairman Janet Demro. “We were very blessed that all the labor costs were donated by volunteers and people who genuinely wanted to help.”
