With the playoffs right around the corner, the Lady ’Hounds continue to steamroll their Valley competition as they barrel their way to an apparent district championship. While they still have two games left on their schedule, including a Friday showdown with second-ranked Los Fresnos, San Benito has all but wrapped up another 32-6A championship as one more win would clinch it for the Lady ’Hounds.

Even more impressive, this year’s squad is looking like the best in school history — quite a feat for a team that has come up a few runs short of a state championship on multiple occasions.

Their latest win was another defensive masterpiece as San Benito was able to cruise to its second Battle of the Arroyo victory, shutting out Harlingen High 2-0. It was the second straight shutout by the Purple and Gold with the Lady ’Hounds sweeping the season series between the two rivals by a combined score of 20-2.

“The community always gets excited for these rivalry games so it does mean a little more for us to get a win like this, but our focus as a team right now is just continuing to get better as we ramp up for the playoffs,” said Head Coach Elias Martinez. “We’re looking to close out the season strong and keep this momentum going.”

The title as best team in school history is a prestigious one, but one this team looks poised to earn. With the unparalleled success of San Benito under Martinez, yearly success is now judged by playoff performance. However, the sheer dominance of their regular season this year has been something to marvel at.
