Several construction projects taking place at the San Benito Consolidated Independent School District are to be completed sometime next year while others have been finalized.
The projects were approved in a $40 million bond issue the voters supported in the district’s most recent bond election. The two unfinished projects are a performing arts center and an aquatic center that are scheduled to be completed in 2024 and set to cost several million dollars over what was budgeted.
The board now has been either terminating contracts with companies previously hired to do the jobs or giving new ones to other companies. The controversy over the school construction projects continues and concerned citizens keep bringing the issue up during every meeting of the district’s board of trustees.
At the last special board meeting held Tuesday, April 4, the administrative body held an executive session to discuss construction matters. Board President Ramiro Moreno said the board has delegated Superintendent Theresa Servellon to engage with legal counsel in matters concerning the district construction projects.
Nothing else was said or explained about the board decision at the end of the four-item agenda.
The board also approved purchases of more than $35,000 and budget amendments as recommended by the superintendent.
