With just one month left until the start of the post-season, the Lady ’Hounds softball team looks destined for another deep playoff run. San Benito opened district play with back-to-back blowout victories that had to be called early.
The Lady ’Hounds needed just four innings to put a 15-0 beat down on Hanna to open up their district slate of games last Friday. San Benito followed that up with a 16-1 thrashing of Rivera that pushed the Ladies win streak to ten.
“Everyone knows our expectations are high and there is a lot of pressure there because we kind of have a target on our back,” said Head Coach Elias Martinez. “I think our girls have stepped up to that pressure and we’re seeing that this team has a chance to be one of the best we’ve had in a long time.”
Through their return to dominance this season, San Benito has regained the attention of the high school softball community. Namely, the Texas Girls Coaches Association currently ranks the Lady ’Hounds as the third best team in 6A while MaxPreps has the girls as the 34th best team in the entire State.
San Benito hasn’t lost a game since March 2, but two of their tougher games are next on the schedule. First, the Ladies will travel to Harlingen on Friday for a Battle of the Arroyo against the 12-8 Cardinals. While the ’Hounds are undoubtedly the favorites in that matchup, rivalry games are notoriously unpredictable.
