Two arrested locally

San Benito Police Department (SBPD) investigators are looking into two separate incidents which were reported this week.

AUTO-THEFT ARREST
On Sunday, March 5, 2023, at about 11:30 a.m., officers of the SBPD responded to the West Business 77 and Oscar Williams Road area for a reckless driver call.

The vehicle was said to have been swerving in and out of traffic, and almost caused multiple crashes with other motorists.

Prior to this call, information was received from the Brownsville Police Department (BPD) about a shooting investigation they were performing along with a vehicle and suspect description of those involved.

San Benito Police Officers located the alleged reckless driver and discovered that the vehicle’s license plate and description matched that of the suspected vehicle from the Brownsville incident.

According to the SBPD, a vehicle pursuit ensued while attempting to stop the driver and the suspected vehicle ultimately collided with an oncoming vehicle rendering it disabled near the FM 732 and Business 77 intersection.

According to a statement issued by the SBPD, three male subjects who occupied the suspect vehicle were detained at the scene and treated for injuries sustained in the crash. It was discovered through an investigation that the vehicle being operated by the suspects was stolen and they were in possession of a stolen handgun. The driver of said vehicle was identified as Abdiel Torres-Cardenas of San Benito. He was charged with the following crimes and is awaiting arraignment:
1.) Theft >=$100 < $750 – Class B Misdemeanor; 2.) Theft >=$2,500 < $30,000 – State Jail Felony; 3.) Intoxication Assault – 3rd Degree Felony; 4.) Evading Arrest / Detention w/ Vehicle – State Jail Felony; 5.) Unlawful Carrying of Weapons – Class A Misdemeanor; 6.) Engaging in Organized Criminal Activity – Class A Misdemeanor.

This case remains under investigation. The two other occupants of the vehicle were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Their identities are being withheld at this time.
