With their historic season in the rear view mirror, this loaded Greyhound senior class of football players can shift their attention to the ongoing college signing season.
After an incredible individual season that saw him collect several post-season awards, the first Greyhound to sign his name on a dotted line is defensive back Homer Quiroz, Jr.
A three year varsity player, Quiroz accepted an offer from Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, New Mexico. Quiroz will be making the phrase ‘Once a Greyhound always a Greyhound’ a reality as ENMU also uses the Greyhounds as their mascot.
“Homer has been leader on this team since he stepped foot on the field and I know he will continue to do great things at the next level,” said Head Football Coach Dan Gomez. “He’s a hard worker and he knew that he had to elevate his play in his senior season to get that kind of recognition from colleges and he clearly did that.”
Quiroz was named to the Honorable Mention All-District squad as a safety after racking up 87 tackles with one interception, three pass deflections and four forced fumbles. He also earned First Team All- District as a return specialist thanks to his two return touchdowns. The multi-faceted athlete says he will play whatever position his new coaching staff asks of him.
“Kick return, safety, corner… whatever the coaches ask of me, that’s where I’ll line up,” Quiroz said just minutes after officially signing his Letter of Intent. “The coaching staff was very welcoming and I’ve had continued contact with them throughout the year. They know I’m ready to make an impact and I can’t wait to show them what San Benito football is all about.”
