Rio Hondo ISD is looking to its new year ahead and answering the question: What can taxpayers expect from the district this coming year?

Superintendent Raul J. Treviño discussed the district’s four goals for the year in an email, beginning with student success. The school board unanimously approved the newly revised District Improvement Plan at the regularly scheduled board meeting on Jan. 16, 2023, which features major instructional initiatives, among them an intentional focus to implement Project Based Learning in the classrooms.

The district is also offering new CTE career pathways for secondary P-TECH (Pathways in Technology Early College High School), most notably RHISD’s partnership with Valley Baptist Medical Center to provide work-based learning experiences at VBMS for students being certified in phlebotomy (new this year), Patient Care Technician and EKG Technician.

Treviño mentioned that Rio Hondo High School P-TECH will be making history by graduating seven seniors with an Associate’s Degree in Multi-Disciplinary Studies through their partnership with Texas Southmost College.

“This is the first time in the history of RHISD that dual enrollment students will be graduating with a college degree as well,” he wrote.

This was once a high performing school district UNTIL the “Brownsville crowd” of administrators moved in; including the infamous Sylvia Atkinson. That’s when academics took a nose dive.
