Former Chief Deputy Gus Reyna, Jr. passed away last month at the age of 59. He was best known as Chief Deputy of the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office, a role he served in since 1999.

Gus Reyna, Jr. is survived by his wife, Martha I. Reyna, and their two children, Gustavo Reyna III and Gerardo Reyna.

Gus Reyna, Jr.’s brother, Javier Reyna, also served in the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office along with Gus. Javier Reyna said he retired in 2021 after 32 years of service, compared to Gus Reyna, Jr.’s 37 years.

Javier Reyna said he and his brother never planned a future in law together, although they had some relatives in law enforcement, including an uncle who served as chief deputy for Sheriff Alex Perez and their grandfather, who was a police officer.

“We both just stuck through it, and we enjoyed serving the people of Cameron County, and that’s what we did best,” said Javier Reyna.

Gus Reyna, Jr.’s career in law enforcement began in Oct. 1983 when he acted as Deputy Sheriff in the Patrol Division. He was later assigned as an investigator under the Criminal Investigations department, a position he served until Aug. of 1990 through May 1994, when he served as Lieutenant with the Civil Process Division.
