Lady ’Hounds claim silver at Border Bash tournament

Special to the NEWS

After narrowly missing the playoffs last season, the San Benito Lady ‘Hounds basketball team enter the 2022 campaign with sky-high expectations.

In addition to posting their most wins (17) since 2017, San Benito welcomes back their top six scorers from last year, as well as all four of their all-district selectees. While the district season will not start until Jan., 2023, the Lady ’Hounds kicked off their season earlier this month, and have already established themselves as a considerable threat to the Valley elite.

San Benito captured the silver medal at the prestigious 36-team Border Bash tournament in McAllen over the weekend. With a sterling 5-1 record through the tournament, the Lady ’Hounds pushed their season mark to 8-6. Head Coach Abel Moreno Jr., who is entering his eighth year at the helm, is anxious to see his young core start to shine.

“We still have a very young group, but they’ve been playing together for a while, and it seems they’re finally starting to reach their potential together,” Moreno said. “It’s very early in the season, so we need to continue to progress if we want to compete with the tough opponents.”

San Benito purposely started off the season with a brutal schedule, as Moreno wanted to test his squad early on. Facing off with powerhouse schools like San Antonio John Jay, Corpus Christi Veterans and Edinburg Vela, the ’Hounds came up short, but managed to make each game a battle. According to Moreno, the tournament performance was a much better indication of the talent level his team boasts.

“We’re still installing a lot of things, as we have three cheerleaders and two volleyball players who are just joining our program,” added Moreno. “We also have two of girls coming back from injuries soon, so we’re kind of ahead of schedule with our record.”
