Toni Crane has been selected as the third judge for the annual San Benito News’ Best Tamales in Town contest.
Crane is a board-certified paralegal for the State Bar of Texas at the Law Office of Randall P. Crane in San Benito, where she’s worked for 37 years. She is also a real estate agent for NPT International.
“I helped last year – I was a greeter,” said Crane, adding “so I already knew about [the tamale contest].”
When the San Benito News, approached Crane about being a judge she accepted, saying, “If they want me, I’ll do it!”
Crane’s favorite tamales are on the sweet side, she said, “I do like the pork tamales, but I do like them with raisins as well. … I like a little sweet in there.”
“Everybody does [tamales] a little differently,” said Crane, adding, “Some do them a little spicy, and I’m not quite into the spicy. I’m more into the sweet – I do like them a little spicy, but not hot. You know, just something with a little flavor.”
“I have to say that my mom’s tamales are probably the best around, and I have to see if anybody can match them,” said Crane of her favorite tamales, “but she’s not in the contest.”
“I’m looking forward to it, and hopefully we’ll have a good turnout and a lot of variety,” she said, “it’ll be fun.”
