Local businessman Uvence “Vince” S. Galvan has been selected as the Grand Marshal for the 64th Annual Longest Lighted Christmas Parade, scheduled Saturday at 6 p.m. in downtown San Benito.
The announcement was made Friday by Special Events Board Interim Chairman Victor Rosas. The Special Events Board sponsors the Parade in conjunction with the City of San Benito. Other board members include Dulce Madrigal, Alex Leal, Zeke Luna and newly appointed member Julio Santana. Board liaison for the City is Martha McClain.
Galvan was the owner of US Galvan Plumbing for 40 years, until his retirement last year. “Mr. Galvan is best known for his service to the San Benito Community as a civic volunteer and as a person who assisted the needy without any expectation of recognition or payment,” Rosas said.
Galvan is a member of the San Benito High School Class of 1962, and was a proud football player with the 1961 Greyhound State Semi-Final Football Team. He served in the National Guard for six years.
Throughout the years, Galvan served his local community as a member of the Jaycees, is a former Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus and was a member of the SBHS Band Boosters. He attended Texas Southmost College, but ultimately became interested in plumbing school, as that had been his family’s business in San Benito for many years.
He and his wife Noemi, take great pride in being founding volunteers of the San Benito Boys and Girls Club in its formative years.
He has been a supporter and sponsor for several Little League football and baseball teams, and has coached some of the years when his children were players. He is also a die-hard Greyhound supporter and Dallas Cowboy fan.
Noemi and Vince have been married or almost 50 years and are the parents of three sons: Uvence Galvan Jr., wife Mari, Paul Conrad and Roman D. and wife Rose. His children are graduates of Texas A&M University and University of Texas Pan American. Their pride and joy extends to their four grandchildren.
They are member of Our Lady Queen of the Universe and St. Joseph Catholic Church.
His interest are in fishing and hunting, walking Heavin Resaca Trail faithfully, doing woodwork and occasional visits to the casinos. His best times, he says, are spent with his family activities, especially with his grandkids at 4H and sport competitions.
Galvan is known for helping others when needed and never expecting anything back in return.
Having lived here most of his life, he says there is no place like home, “in San Benito.”
The Special Events Board is proud to make the announcement and to recognize Uvence “Vince” S. Galvan and his family for their commitment to the City of San Benito.
Serving as judges for the parade this year are Velma de los Santos, Ramiro Partida and Janie Rios.
