The San Benito Police Department was involved in two separate episodes this week which concluded in two different shootings.
On March 28, 2022, at approximately 10:41 p.m., officers responded to a 911 call at the 900 block of E. Stenger Street in reference to a domestic disturbance.
According to a press release issued by the City of San Benito, this was the second time that evening officers were dispatched out to the residence in regards to a male subject acting aggressively toward family members. The mother had previously informed officers that the suspect had thrown a knife in her direction.
According to the release, officers arrived on scene and made contact with a female standing outside the residence who informed them that her son was breaking items inside.
As the officers entered the residence, contact was made with the male subject in a bedroom toward the rear of the residence. The officer attempted to communicate with the male, but when the male saw the officer, he grabbed a glass bottle from a dresser in a threating manner.
The male then raised the glass bottle over his head in an attempt to strike the officer. Several times, the officer ordered the male to drop the bottle, but he refused the officer’s commands. The officer then discharged his duty weapon, striking the male twice.
Officers immediately provided medical attention to the male subject’s wounds until emergency medical services arrived. The male, 35, was then transported to the hospital where he is currently listed in stable condition, the news release stated.
The Cameron County Sheriff’s Office will be assisting with the investigation. The investigation is ongoing and detectives are working to gather more information about the incident. No further information will be released at the moment.
