Running is a part of many sports. Some athletes love to run and others don’t. For San Benito Lady ’Hound track sensation Esmer Sosa, she doesn’t just love to run, she feels that running makes her who she is.

This 16-year-old sophomore standout has been winning races, gaining medals, and making friends with her competition among the track scene since her freshman track season. She’s currently ranked third place among other runners from the Valley in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.69 so far this season. Sosa is also at third place in the 200 meter dash and in the long jump.

As a freshman, Sosa burst on to the track scene and earned a trip to regionals in the 100 meter dash, long jump and 800 meter relay. Sosa also made an unlikely friend amid her competition in the 200 meter dash. She befriended Debbie Lozano of Los Fresnos, who at the time was also a freshman. The two have remained friends and continue to race alongside each other. According to Sosa, they also offer their support to one another before and after races. “We tell each other good luck and great race. We also hang out when we aren’t competing,” she explained.
