SBCISD logoAre Governor Rick Perry’s policies to blame for a multi-billion dollar state shortfall that could lead to potential statewide education cuts? San Benito CISD Superintendent of Schools Antonio G. Limón pointed to a 2006 letter from then-Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn that some believe may make such a case.

The superintendent submitted a letter to the editor Monday to the San Benito News in which he cites a five-year-old correspondence from Strayhorn to Perry that calls into question the governor’s tax plan, warning that “this legislation is a staggering $23 billion short of the funds needed to pay for the promised property tax cuts over the next five years.”

The shortfall facing the state today is an estimated $27 billion, which is expected to affect every district in the state as approximately $10 billion may be cut from schools’ state funding. Concerns have since spread statewide regarding each district’s response and if educators will be laid off as a result, San Benito is the exception.
