RIO HONDO — Two games, two strong outings.
That’s what Rio Hondo is talkin’ about.
The Bobcats used another stifling defensive effort and once again got their offense rolling and never looked back in a 41-13 shellacking of 6A La Joya Juarez-Lincoln at Bobcat Stadium on Friday night.
For the second straight week, Rio Hondo (2-0) started a tad slow and then hit the gas to outlast the opposition.
“So far, so good. We’re basically where we expected to be,” Rio Hondo head coach Rocky James said. “Juarez-Lincoln came in prepared and did a good job but our team was ready to play tonight.”
With Rio Hondo up 7-0 on a score by Alan Alfaro, the Huskies came back to tie game at on a short TD run with 8:59 left in the first.
But Alfaro put the Cats up for good with a short TD run and then Marco Garate scored on a seven-yarder to push the advantage to 21-7 Rio Hondo with 7:41 left in the first half. Shortly thereafter, Garate hopped in from three yards out as the Cats led 27-7 at the half.
Rio Hondo held the Huskies to 32 yards in the first half and the defense was on fire again, forcing several turnovers.
In the second half, QB Joshua Gonzalez scored on a 13-yard keeper and the Bobcat defense was aggressive all night, including an INT from Eliseo Guerrero while Eli Pitones caught one from Gonzalez as well.
Rio Hondo next travels to Sinton next Friday in what figures to be a true test. The Pirates lost in an upset to Rockport-Fulton 65-53.
“They were upset tonight, but it’s a good measuring stuck,” James said of Sinton. “We’re playing really good defense and the offense is coming on strong. We had a lot reps being handed out so a lot of kids getting playing time and that’s gonna help us down the road. We’re excited for this game.”
LOS FRESNOS 35, EDCOUCH-ELSA 31: At Elsa, it almost happened again.
Los Fresnos held a comfortable 35-10 lead over Edcouch-Elsa going into the fourth quarter before the Jackets stormed back with three unanswered touchdowns.
Luckily, the Falcons were able to hold on and escape the Delta area with a four point win, their first of the young season.
The Falcons started out hot when on E-E’s first play from scrimmage, Isaiah Zepeda gathered a Jacket fumble and ran in 15 yards for a touchdown just 17 seconds into the contest.
E-E came back on a long TD run to knot the game at 7 with 11:01 in the first.
James Rangel helped the Falcons retake the lead with his nine-yard TD run and later Miguel Garcia was on the receiving end of a TD pass from Pierce Ruiz making it 21-7 Los Fresnos with 5:39 left before half.
E-E booted a field goal to close to 21-10 before the Falcons answered with scores by Ruiz (1-yard run) and the special teams via a blocked punt and subsequent return for a TD. Los Fresnos led 35-10 with 1:28 to go.
That set up the Jackets’ rally, but it fell short.
Los Fresnos will hit the road again next week, going to PSJA Stadium to face PSJA North.
EDINBURG VELA 42, HARLINGEN SOUTH 7: At Harlingen, the Vela SaberCats showed they’re indeed for real with a huge win over the Hawks.
Vela (2-0) got 111 yards and four touchdowns from Anthony Arredondo to start perfect for the first time in the school’s short history. The SaberCats were 0-10 as a first-year school in 2012 before improving to 5-5 a year ago.
South (1-1) struck first when QB Jimmy Morton hit Alec Garza for a 20-yard score and the game was later tied at 14 apiece. However, the SaberCats tightened up on defense and put the clamps on the Hawks, sending them to their first loss of the year.
Harlingen South will face Weslaco East next week.
