Five candidates have filed for their candidacy in area elections since the last San Benito News report.
Three of four Rio Hondo ISD School Board incumbents have filed for reelection; they are trustees Noe Alaniz, Jr., Pl. 1, Tomas Gomez, Pl. 5, and Manuel Flores, Jr., Pl. 6. They follow Thomas Wiesman who already filed for reelection to his Pl. 7 seat. No official word on whether there’ll be challengers; however, school officials said a number of people have picked up election packets.
The City of Rio Hondo elections continue to take shape, albeit slowly. The field of candidates now includes a race between current Mayor Alonzo Garza and Pl. 4 City Commissioner Joe Lopez, both of whom filed. Gunning for Lopez’s seat is Miguel Uresti. Also filing was Pl. 2 City Commissioner Gloria Barrientos.
