Lady ’Hound Softball
The Lady ’Hounds varsity softball team placed second at the Mission Fastpitch Tournament this past weekend. The Lady ’Hounds defeated Eagle Pass Winn, 13-0; Tuluso Midway, 5-2; Edinburg North, 9-6; and Harlingen South, 6-3 before losing the championship game by a score of 9-7. Adriana “Squirt” Flores and Amber Jasso made the All-Tournament Team. The Lady ’Hounds also defeated the Harlingen Lady Cardinals in softball action Monday night by a score of 10-1. Leading hitters were Kassandra Contreras who went 2-3 and Kasey Sanchez who went 2-4. The team’s record now stands at 6-1.

Greyhound Baseball
The Greyhound varsity baseball team fell Monday to the Harlingen South Hawks in a close contest. The score was 7-6, and the Greyhounds now fall to 0-1 in overall play. Going 3-5 were Jacob Puente and Alberto Vallejo, the former had one RBI to the latter’s two. Jerry Arizpe, Adam Guzman, and Steven Martinez all had an RBI each.

The following are the track results for the San Benito Greyhound varsity track team in the Sams Relays held at Sams Stadium in Brownsville on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011. In the 3200 meter run, Hector Becerra placed fifth with a time of 10.19.14 and Rafael Duenez placed 10th with a time of 10.35.50; 400 meter relay – Jacob Puente, Joshua Alonzo, Elias Gonzales, and Arturo Coronado placed fourth with a time of 4.5.84; 800 meter run – Oscar Yanez finished with a time of 2.12.87; 100 meter dash – Cody Serna ran a time of 11.74, Julian Vasquez ran a time of 12.09 and Raul Luna ran a time of 12.64; 400 meter dash – James Weaver ran a time of 54.90; 300 meter hurdles – James Weaver ran a time of 45.27 and Jacob Ledesma ran a time of 49.20; 200 meter dash – Cody Serna ran a time of 24.41 and Joshua Alonzo ran a time of 24.20 and Julian Vasquez ran a time of 25.01; 800 meter relay – Jacob Puente, Joshua Alonzo, Elias Gonzales, and Arturo Coronado ran a time of 1.38.57; 1600 meter run – Hector Becerra placed sixth with a time of 4.38.57 and Rafael Duenez ran a time of 4.57.42 and Oscar Yanez ran a time of 5.26.17; pole vault – Jacob Ledesma cleared 10 feet; long jump – Cody Serna jumped 19’1/2” and Arturo Coronado jumped 17’8” and Raul Luna jumped 17’7”.

In the 100 meter, Esmer Sosa placed first with a time of 13.07; 200 meter – Esmer Sosa placed second with a time of 27.70; 400 meter – Cejay Banuelos placed second with a time of 1.02.38; 800 meter – Brenda Lopez placed sixth with a time of 2.32.84; 100 hurdles – Veronica De Leon placed third with a time of 17.55; 1600 meter – Brenda Lopez finished third with a time of 5.38.44; 3200 meter – Selene Becerra placed sixth with a time of 13.00.88; long jump – Esmer Lopez placed second jumping 16-11; shot put – Samantha Martinez placed second with 33-0; 4×400 relay – Esmer Sosa, Vivi Abrego, Meleny Munoz, and Cejay Banuelos placed sixth with a time of 4.27.72.

Greyhound Basketball
The San Benito Greyhound freshmen gold team defeated Brownsville Pace by a forfeit. The team’s record stands at 14-9 and was coached by Sidney Lewis. The freshmen purple defeated Pace by a score of 42-27. The team’s record stands at 17-6 and was coached by Joel Lopez. Scoring for the purple team were Aaron Robles – 10 points, Jaime Sanchez – nine points, Enrique Guzman – six points, Bobby Mollish – five points, Joey Diaz – four points, Arturo Lucero – two points, John Rodriguez – two points, Ruben Montelongo – two points, and Sturgis Zavala – two points.
