The cafeteria at the old high school and former Berta Cabaza Middle School is being demolished after the roof collapsed, San Benito CISD Superintendent of Schools Antonio G. Limón said.
“We were concerned that some student or child, out of curiosity, is going to get in there and get themselves hurt. So we made the decision, and the board approved it, to go ahead and demolish that cafeteria area and refurbish the gym that’s there,” Limón said.
The gym at the school will be refurbished at minimal cost, the superintendent added. The roof was recently repaired as the Gateway Academy, which currently utilizes a small portion of the old middle school, may accommodate the space.
“We’re also going to use it for other district events once it’s refurbished,” Limón said.
Not all of the cafeteria will be demolished. According to Limón, there is a section that is closer to the road which will be used for storage.
