Filing period for city, school elections kicks off

city logoMonday, Feb. 14 marked the first day for candidates to file their intent for the May 2011 elections in San Benito.

According to City Secretary Lupita Passement, candidates who have either filed or picked up packets as of presstime include incumbents Tony Gonzales for Place 1 City Commissioner and Rene Villafranco for Plc. 2 City Commissioner as well as Mayor Jack Garcia. Also filing was former Mayor Joe H. Hernandez, who seeks his old position. Gavino Sotelo has expressed his intentions to run for the Plc. 2 post as well.

SBCISD logoEmma McCall, Election Administrator for the San Benito CISD elections, reported Tuesday that no one had filed for candidacy and only two people had picked up packets thus far, though it is unknown who the two individuals were as of presstime.

The last day for candidates to file for candidacy in both the city and the school board elections is March 14.
