The first annual Child Abuse Prevention 5K Run/Walk, an event sponsored by San Benito CISD, is scheduled later this month.
The goal of the run and walk, slated Saturday, April 27, is to help create awareness for child abuse and its repercussions.
“In 2012, almost 2,000 cases of child abuse have been documented,” said Angela Totman, a counselor employed with San Benito CISD who also works in conjunction with Prevent Child Abuse Texas.
“It seems to be on the rise,” she added about child abuse cases.
The proceeds from the event will equally benefit Prevent Child Abuse Texas, a statewide non-profit organization working to prevent child abuse and neglect in all its forms throughout Texas, and the local Cameron County advocacy centers, Maggie’s House and Monica’s House. Currently, event organizers are accepting donations and sponsorships; all contributions are tax deductible.
The walk and run will start at 9 a.m., at which time assorted speakers and representatives will speak to the participants and the spectators. Refreshments will also be served.
Participation is open for everyone, including high school students.
“Any student who wants to participate can come up to their counselor or contact me so they can pick up a registration or sponsorship form, and we will help them out,” Totman said, adding she sent registration forms to all of the schools.
For more information, call Totman at (956) 361-6482.

It’s great to see these walks happening all over the nation. A new documentary – One Punch Homicide – will reduce violence against everyone – children, the elderly, disabled, lgbt, women, and men.
