San Benito, TX—Pedro Torres Cantu, 87, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, and brother, entered into eternal rest on Jan. 29, 2011, at the Spanish Meadows Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Brownsville, Texas.
He was born on May 15, 1923 in Los Fresnos, Texas to Federico Cantu and Rosa Torres Cantu.
He was a lifetime resident of the Rio Grande Valley having lived in Los Fresnos and San Benito. He had been a San Benito resident since about 1989.
Pedro was a World War II veteran and his occupations included trucking, management of crews harvesting valley crops, and as an employee of Brown and Root Company.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his twin brother, Raul Cantu; twin brothers, Manuel and Pilar Cantu; brothers: Eduardo Cantu and Federico Cantu, Jr.; sisters: Aurora Cantu Bruce of Los Fresnos; Eloisa Cantu Ramirez of Brownsville; Olivia Cantu Gonzales of Harlingen; and Maria Ester Cantu Alaniz of Brownsville.
He is survived by his devoted wife of about 68 years, Teresa Gonzales Cantu of San Benito; his five sons: Hector (Maria) Cantu of San Benito; Rodolfo (Lucila) Cantu of Mission; Arutro (June) Cantu of San Antonio; Oscar (Minerva) Cantu of Brownsville; and Joel Cantu of Mission; his sister, Margarita Barradas of Houston; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Public visitation hours were held from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at San Benito Funeral Home Chapel with a holy rosary at 7:00 p.m., with the family present from 4:00-9:00 p.m. on Monday, January 31, 2011.
Funeral mass was held on Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Los Fresnos, Texas. Interment followed at Mont Meta Memorial Park Cemetery, San Benito, Texas.
Full military honors were under the apiece of VFW Post 2039 at Mont Meta Memorial Park Cemetery.
Pallbearers were his grandsons: Robert Cantu, Hector Cantu, Jr.; Oscar Cantu, Jr.; Richard Anthony Cantu, Todd Cantu and Orlando Cantu.
Serving as honorary pallbearers were his grandsons, Rodolfo Cantu, Jr.; Troy Cantu, David Cantu, Daniel Cantu and Joel Cantu, Jr.
