These are the sentiments of Valley residents, many of whom are welcoming news that there may be a chance of snow as a result of the arctic blast moving into the Valley this week.

The last time snow fell in the Rio Grande Valley was on Christmas Eve of 2004, at that time it had been nearly a hundred years since the last such occurrence. But according to Ashley Butts, there is a 30 percent chance of snow for the San Benito and Harlingen area set for Thursday evening and ending around 10 a.m. on Friday, when the temperature is expected to rise above freezing causing the snow to turn to rain.

“On Thursday we are going to have a wind disturbance which might bring a little precipitation to the area, which with the cold temperatures it could be the wintry type precipitation,” said Butts, a forecaster for the National Weather Service (NWS) in Brownsville. “It looks like mostly sleet, but you can’t rule out some snow mixing in with that as well. But the big thing we’re going to be looking at is the sleet.”
