A free six-week nutrition and cooking program to help residents improve their health is being offered through the “Happy Kitchen” series, with classes scheduled from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Annex Building 2, 705 N. Bowie, San Benito.

The program, open to families across the community, teaches participants how food choices can support healthier, more active lifestyles while addressing common concerns such as weight management, cholesterol, and diabetes.

“Our primary goal is to serve the community and teach how food can help us stay healthy and active,” said program coordinator Letty Gomez, who added that the classes are designed for any family interested in improving their lifestyle.

The six-week series meets once a week for 90 minutes. Participants receive a booklet covering topics such as healthy eating, meal planning, and effective food budgeting. The program emphasizes practical strategies for use at home.

Organizers report that past participants have shown measurable improvements, including increased fruit and vegetable intake and weight loss after completing the program.

The classes are offered at no cost to participants through grant funding from the Centers for Disease Control, administered by UT Health.

If participation remains strong, organizers say the program could be offered each year.
