LA JOYA, TX—The San Benito Lady Greyhounds’ basketball season concluded after a Class 6A bi-district loss to the Lady Coyotes on Tuesday.

The Lady ‘Hounds were aiming to advance to the second round for a fourth consecutive year, but it wasn’t meant to be, as San Benito fell on the road, 39-33.

Still, San Benito made it to the playoffs for a fourth consecutive season, finishing fourth in District 32-6A.

SBHS finished with a 13-21 season record and was second in the district with a 5-4 mark; it also included a seeding game the team won against the Los Fresnos Lady Falcons, 47-38, a week earlier.

Last season, SBHS finished third in the district and won a first-round playoff game, 49-41, over Edinburg North. They lost to Laredo United South in the area round of the postseason in two consecutive years.

La Joya (26-12) now faces Buda Johnson in the area.

Next season, 32-6A will comprise of PSJA North and High, with Brownsville Hanna gone. Harlingen, Brownsville Veterans Memorial, and Los Fresnos will return to make up a six-team district.

RIO HONDO

The Rio Hondo Lady ’Cats earned an 81-42 win over the Vanguard Academy Rembrandt Lady Spartans in a Class 3A bi-district game at home, advancing to the second round for the second consecutive season.

The Lady ’Cats held a 28-10 lead after a quarter. To the Lady Spartans’ credit, their opening-quarter score was more than they had totaled a year ago in a loss to RHHS.

RHHS Head Coach Victor Sauceda, as he’s done all season, sometimes substituted three or four players at a time. By the game’s end, nearly everyone on the squad had attempted a basket.

Sophomore Carlie Rodriguez led all scorers with 30 points, followed by senior Abigail Atkinson with 25 and sophomore Evan Ayala with 18.

Coach Sauceda, who hoisted a bi-district trophy, said he was pleased with his defense’s play, which led to offensive points off turnovers.

The Lady ’Cats once again faced the Bishop Lady Badgers (30-6 season record), with the area game held at La Feria High School on Thursday.

It was a mirror image of last season’s postseason, as RHHS defeated the same Vanguard team by a 95-6 margin.

The Lady ’Cats’ season ended in the area round with a 48-40 loss to Bishop, which advanced to the regional final (fourth round) a year ago against Corpus Christi West Oso.

This year, Bishop defeated West Oso in bi-district, 52-38, improving RHHS’s season record to 28-1. Vanguard closes its season with a 15-7 mark.
